Exam season is underway, and it can be a bit overwhelming trying to juggle your mental health and achieving good grades. A multitude of exams, evaluations and deadlines create enormous pressure to perform which could lead to stress. This stress, however, can have a critical impact on the learning and memorising process.
Here are some helpful tips to consider during this manic time:
Self-affirmations lead to positivity
According to the National Library of Medicine (NLM), self-affirmations can restore self-competence by allowing individuals to reflect on sources of self-worth. Self-doubt often leads to underperformance. Consequently, positive affirmations can give you more confidence to tackle your academic work productively.
Relax and smell the roses
Phoebe Maart, BA communications student, shares that academic pressure is one of the main influences on her mental health. She suggests taking a walk, stargazing, and sipping on mint flavoured tea as ideas for possible breaks. One could also add lo-fi music to your playlist and do stretches, like yoga, to uplift your mood during study breaks.
Prioritise sleep
Most students prefer studying late at night and that’s okay, but there should be ample time left for a good night’s rest. Make sleeping a habit — as cliché as it may sound. A minimum of 8 hours is good for the brain.
Stop overthinking
As a student your workload can be very daunting but take everything one step at a time. Avoid procrastinating and conform to a planned schedule. Don’t compare yourself to other students, that will only cause more stress.
Never hesitate to shout for help
As the saying goes, no man is an island. Never feel ashamed to ask your classmates questions on topics you don’t understand. You might be able to help them too. Don’t feel hesitant to email a lecturer either. Just remember to send emails during work hours.
Studying and preparing for exams require commitment which can cause uncertainties and stress. Luckily there are many routes to follow when the stress levels are unbearable.
Good luck with your exam season!
