On Thursday, 18 July, members of Wapad and PUKfm collaborated in an effort to keep the Bult clean. This was done in the spirit of Mandela Day, where South Africans are encouraged to give 67 minutes of their time to positively impact their communities.
Team members walked from campus to the broader Bult and Cachet Park area to pick up rubbish. The conditions were especially windy, but the team was in high spirits and smiles were seen all around.
Thabang Matlaila, PUKfm’s Marketing Manager and organiser of the event shared, “Giving back to people and the community just fills something in my heart. You don’t need many resources to make a big impact. Even small things, like what we are doing today, can make a difference.”
Lente Treurnich, Wapad’s Arts and Entertainment Editor and self-proclaimed environmentalist, explained that she enjoys caring for the environment, and Mandela Day provides the perfect opportunity to do just that.
After 67 minutes of picking up mainly cigarette butts, bottle caps, wrappers, and other small items of litter, the team enjoyed a well-deserved break in the shade at Cachet Park.
Ilzaan Muller, PUKfm member and the presenter of Wapad’s speciality show with PUKfm, Studio Spectrum, said, “Mandela Day gives us an opportunity to reach out and assist our communities and support each other, like we are doing today.”
Wapad and PUKfm have been collaborating for the past year on different levels, a development which, according to Treurnich, is lovely to see. She further added, “Seeing the campus media come together, especially like this, means a lot to me.”
