With the exam season in full swing at the North-West University (NWU), many students spend their days studying and completing assignments. Students may feel stressed and pressured during this time, and it is important to take an opportunity to wind down. Wapad suggests spots like Potchefstroom dam, Gimmie Gat, and the Vlei.
Potchefstroom dam, located about 3km from campus, is a hotspot for students to blow off some steam and enjoy the picturesque scenery. The dam was established in 1950 and has since been used for recreational purposes, such as camping, swimming, fishing or boating activities.
The dam is a particularly good spot for some awe-inspiring sunsets or a braai. Students can make use of the official (paid) entrance close to River Café, on the engineering campus’ side of town. The dam boasts clean-cut banks, great braai areas, ample space and clean bathrooms.
Alternatively, the same awe-inspiring views can be seen (for free) if you drive to Vyfhoek, take a left at Tuscany Ridge Estate, and keep driving past the Spar centre. Construction is currently underway in this area, so remember to be careful, and to not enter undesignated
areas.
This area allows for great sunset views at zero cost. However, there are no designated braai areas and the road to the dam is best suited for 4×4 vehicles. Smaller groups should also be vigilant when walking in this area after dark.
Gimmie Gat is another ideal place to unwind. Located near Potchefstroom Gimnasium on the banks of the Mooi River, Gimmie Gat is a tranquil escape from the obligations of being a student. People come here to read, study, take a walk, listen to music or just relax in the winter sun. Ebet Bester, a first-year student and resident of Bellatrix Ladies’ Residence, said, “I usually go for Bible study, to have a picnic, swim in the summer, and to read.”
Lastly, the Vlei is another hotspot for students to gather, braai and unwind. Lovingly referred to as ‘the Vlei’, the various braai spots scattered in between the rugby fields at the Fanie du Toit are a great spot to unwind and enjoy the calming sounds of the river. Remember to bring torches if you plan to stay later, as the braai areas are not well-lit.
One frequenter of this particular spot, Hugo Nothnagel, a first-year student residing in Invictus Men’s Residence, stated that his first time at the Vlei was for an aksie. “It was very calm, but if there are many people it can become a ‘jol’,” he said. He further explained that if you attend a party at the Vlei the atmosphere is always pleasant. “I would definitely recommend the Vlei,” he said.
