Many of the first-semester sports have already concluded their campaigns for the year (chess, cricket, squash, table-tennis), but the inter-residence and chapter hockey and netball leagues are still ongoing.
Last week’s student-spectated sporting action, apart from the rugby, included: netball at the Fanie du Toit sports complex and hockey at the astro turf fields. A flash summary of some of the action that transpired follows.
At the astro fields, the noise was deafening as always. On Monday, 13 May, the biggest talking point had to be Oosterhof getting an emphatic 6-0 win over Huis Republiek. Villagers emulated Oosterhof’s performance, on the men’s side, with a 4-0 victory over Over-De-Voor.
On Wednesday, 15 May, the biggest scoreline came from Dinki’s win over Minjonet: 4-0, with the men’s match-ups proceeding the following day. Villagers proved to be the team to be feared as they nearly tripled their exploits from Monday night by sweeping Caput with an 11-to-nothing scoreline.
From the Fanie du Toit netball courts, the current standings from the women’s residence netball tournament as of Wednesday, include the qualifying of the second teams of: Bellatrix, to face Wag-‘n- Bietjie, and Heide against Wanda, in the quarter-finals -with Klawerhof and Vergeet-My-Nie’s respective quarter-final opponents yet to be determined.
The first teams are still in the groups stages with Huis Republiek leading the lot with the most points of all the teams irrespective of group/pool.
In the women’s chapters contest, the Engineering and Faculty of Economic and Management Science (FEMS) first teams have already qualified for the semifinals with their respective opponents yet to be determined.
In the men’s netball bout, the first and second team contests are still in their group stages. Veritas currently has the most points of all the competing residences-enjoying the leader’s seat with both their teams (1st and 2nd) topping their respective groups/pools.
Frequent the final stages of the hockey and netball this week to support your residence, support your sleepies, and to see which teams are the best of the best.
