The new semester has now “kicked-off” and that means more residence sport. Following last semester’s sporting campaigns, the new season of residence and chapter sport commences with only netball and rugby, from last semester, yet to conclude.

Sports to anticipate this semester from the organising Sport Portfolio Committee, according to the office’s vicechair, Delius Schoeman, include soccer and athletics (of which both are big sports), and small sports: basketball, badminton, tennis, rugby-sevens, “touchies” rugby, volleyball, and the hypermodern alternative – e-sports.

According to Selaelo “Sly” Phosa, netball is set to conclude and only a few fixtures remain.

Some action that students would have already started attending include first and second male and female soccer fixtures which commenced last week; as well as seeing off some male and female fixtures at the Fanie du Toit netball courts.

Basketball commenced on Monday, 22 July, to which Phemelo “Mello” Ramasike, technical assistant for the first and second team coaching staff, explained: “All residences will be playing ‘5v5’ and all chapters/faculties will be playing ‘3v3’. For every game, we will be selecting ALL-STAR players who will be playing against the NWU second team at the end of the leagues. We will also select MVPs from these teams according to their performance at the games. May the best man win.”

More second-semester sports will commence in the coming weeks. Be on the look out for trial dates and information from your Sport SAC and HC members alike should this be the term for the sport/s that you can be prominent in.
