STUDENTS SHARE THEIR FAVOURITE SPOTS FOR FIRST DATES

Going on a first date can be nerve-wracking, awkward and uncomfortable. Sometimes the conversation can lag, or worse it can feel like the date may never end. A well-chosen location will not only ease any fears but also serve as a great conversation starter.

 

The atmosphere of a date is greatly determined by the location. In case of a first-date emergency where you can’t think of anything to say, you can comment on the excellent food, music or scenery. It will also prevent awkward conversations about the weather, which we all know is the epitome of dull conversations.

 

The overall atmosphere of the date can be determined by the place, whether it is a restaurant with romantic music and gloomy lighting for ambience, a buzzing outdoor market, or maybe a scenic picnic in a field.

 

Julianne Olivier, a first-year student residing in Huis Republiek Ladies’ Residence, says that her ideal first date spot would be Potchefstroom Dam. “The whole atmosphere, specifically when the sun sets, is so stunning. Especially when there’s good music,” she stated.

 

Stefan “Cruize” Wilken, a first-year student from Laureus Men’s Residence, shared his first date spot preference, “I would say watching a movie at Ster-Kinekor at Mooirivier Mall, you can never go wrong with a movie date.” He also said that movie dates are “iconic”, and that it is romantic to hold a girl’s hand in the cinema.

 

Deon Jansen van Vuuren, a first-year student from Villagers Men’s Residence, prefers somewhere a bit more crowded for a first date. “I prefer places like Texas for a first date. Otherwise, the Potchefstroom Dam also always works.”

 

Then you can also always consider the less obvious choices if you want to get a bit creative. Those who enjoy a bit of mental stimulation for a first date can consider taking someone to Potchefstroom’s escape room, SA Mind Maze. Another option could be to ride go-karts in Mooirivier Mall’s parking lot if adrenaline-inducing activities appeal to you. Lastly, if you and your partner consider yourselves active, you could always enjoy a game of padel at Padel Circle.
