October is adorned with pink ribbons, not just for their aesthetic appeal but to raise awareness for breast cancer. Established in October 1985, as a partnership between the American Cancer Society and the pharmaceutical division of Imperial Chemical Industries, Breast Cancer Awareness Month focuses on raising funds for breast cancer research and related causes.
Breast Cancer Facts
Here are some lesser-known facts about breast cancer, as highlighted by the American Cancer Society:
Symptoms
Women older than 50 are more prone to developing breast cancer, but it is crucial for younger women to be aware of the symptoms for early detection. According to the WHO (World Health Organization), the symptoms include:
Treatment
Breast cancer treatment often involves chemotherapy, which can lead to hair loss, a common stigma. According to the Mayo Clinic, the treatment process typically starts with surgery to remove the cancerous growths or tumours. Post-surgery, patients may receive hormone therapy, chemotherapy, and radiation.
Some patients might undergo hormone therapy or chemotherapy before surgery to shrink the cancerous growth or tumour. This makes it easier to remove. The surgical options include mastectomy and lumpectomy (breast-conserving surgery). Some women may only have the option of a mastectomy.
Cosmetic Surgery After Treatment
Breast reconstruction varies from patient to patient. The two primary categories are implant-based reconstruction and autologous reconstruction, each with various specific techniques.
The cancer that affects women the most in South Africa is breast cancer. It affects about 19.4 million women who are 15 years of age and older, according to CANSA (Cancer Association of South Africa).
Early detection is key in the treatment of this disease and women from the age of 15 years and older, should regularly check their health and the symptoms stipulated.
