Sean Michael Roulston plays as an eighth-man for the NWU Eagles. He hails from the small town of Tzaneen in Limpopo. Sean could be described by the lyrics of Journey’s Don’t Stop Believin’: “Just a small-town boy, born and raised in South Detroit. In his case, he was a small-town boy born and raised in Tzaneen, chasing a dream to excel in rugby.

His journey to the NWU Eagles was a testament to his determination and resilience. Growing up, his biggest inspiration was his older brother, a naturally gifted rugby player. Sean aspired to emulate his brother’s success. Much like the rugby version of Serena Williams, his path to greatness was paved with hard work and perseverance.

Sean described his high school rugby career as challenging, often filled with self-doubt about whether he had what it took to succeed. Just when he was on the verge of giving up, his best friend gave him a piece of advice that he still holds dear: to keep playing because one day, success would follow. Sean took those words to heart, worked tirelessly, and his efforts paid off.

In 2022, he joined NWU—and with that, the Eagles—and never looked back. The following year, he was part of the team that won the Varsity Cup, breaking a seven-year drought and ending what many called “the curse.”

Despite these triumphs, Sean has faced significant setbacks. Over the past three years, he has undergone three separate surgeries. Yet, his faith has never wavered. He credits God as his biggest source of strength, helping him navigate the toughest times.

Even with achievements that many only dream of, Sean remains humble. He acknowledges that without God, his family, and his girlfriend, none of his success would have been possible.

He left one piece of advice for aspiring NWU Eagles players and that is to “clench whatever opportunities you have with both hands and make the most of it. ” Sean’s story serves as a reminder to remain patient, persistent and determined , because one day it will play off.
