Over a hundred students in Potchefstroom took to the streets on Wednesday, 2 April, marching 2.2 kilometers from Cachet Park to the North-West Department of Education. This demonstration was a powerful stand against gender-based violence (GBV) and a call for justice for seven-year-old Cwecwe, whose tragic story has shaken the nation.

The march included a poignant two-minute silence at the North-West University (NWU) main gate, honoring Cwecwe and other victims like Alu and Boy.

Fikile Mangengenenne, the EFF Youth Command Provincial Coordinator, emphasised the importance of this march. “As a society, we know that GBV is a pandemic in our country. We cannot be silent,” Fikile stated. The march aimed to unite the community in a shared commitment to end violence and abuse.

Demands for School Accountability

The case of Cwecwe, who was allegedly raped on the grounds of Bergview College, has highlighted severe lapses in school safety and accountability. The school’s handling of the case has been criticized, with calls for immediate action. The memorandum read by Qhama Hamani, Deputy Chairperson of the Umzi kaPhalo Xhosa Society at the North-West Department of Education main gate, outlined specific demands:

Security Enhancements: Immediate improvements in surveillance and access control at schools.

GBV Prevention Education: Curriculum-based training for students and staff on rights and support systems.

Anonymous Reporting System: A safe way for victims and witnesses to report abuse.

Designated Educators for Abuse Cases: Trained professionals to handle cases of sexual abuse and harassment.

Justice for Cwecwe

The memorandum also called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible for Cwecwe’s abuse. It demanded disciplinary action against implicated school staff and the temporary closure of Bergview College until accountability is ensured. This case has become a rallying point for broader demands for justice and reform.

A Call for Change

The march and the demands it presented are a call to action for everyone involved in education and community safety. The students’ voices, amplified by leaders like Fikile and Qhama, are pushing for real change. Their efforts highlight the urgent need for systemic reforms to protect children and ensure justice for victims.
