Vilano Saunders, a dedicated and passionate rugby player for the NWU Vanderbijlpark campus under-21 team, has tragically passed away at the tender age of 20. His death was a result of a broken neck sustained during a match – while playing in the hooker position, a role he had not been fully trained or prepared for. Vilano was not just a rugby player; he was a down-to-earth, genuine soul whose presence lit up any room. Those closest to him describe him as someone who made it his mission to brighten others’ days – even if it was with a simple smile or a kind hello. His warmth and positivity has left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Rugby was not just a sport to Vilano; it was a calling. From high school, his raw talent and deep love for the game were clear. That passion earned him a place on the NWU under-21 rugby team. However, even the most gifted athletes need proper guidance and support. His tragic passing highlights a sobering truth: talent, no matter how bright, must be nurtured with care – and safety must always come first. Being asked to play in a high-contact position like hooker, without adequate experience, put Vilano at significant risk. A study done in France by Rugbyworld.co.za has concluded that the most dangerous rugby position is the hooker position, due to high contact in the neck, face and shoulder areas. The crucial role this position plays in a scrum also contributes to the high contact and overall high risk position.
Rugby is a beautiful game, but it comes with undeniable risk. As fans, teammates, and part of this university community, we must remember that every match is played by individuals who put their bodies – and their lives – on the line. The wins we celebrate and losses we critique should never come at the cost of a life. We owe it to players like Vilano Saunders to ask, “Couldn’t we have done more to protect this young man who had contributed to a long-standing tradition of keeping the pride in the university’s rugby team?”
Vilano Saunders’s life was cut far too short, but his spirit – full of love, laughter, and unshakeable passion – will live on. May his story remind us to cherish each other, support our athletes with care, and never take a simple hello or smile for granted.
To Vilano Saunders’s close family, friends, and teammates: The Wapad team extends our deepest condolences. May you find comfort in knowing that his light touched so many and will never be forgotten.
