It’s that time of the semester – time to travel back home, rest and reset. For most, that may mean driving back in your own car or with a friend. Whatever the situation may be, there are some useful safety tips drivers should keep in mind when travelling.

Even though it is exciting to head back home, there are some things you can do before your journey to help make the trip as smooth as possible. Firstly, plan your route in advance, check the weather and traffic conditions, and consider including rest stops along the way, especially when driving to a province like the Western Cape or Kwa-Zulu Natal. Secondly, tell a friend or loved one the estimated time of arrival (ETA) and share the route with them which helps them prepare for your arrival and also gives them peace of mind. Lastly, pack some snacks, a water bottle, power bank, and a good playlist or selection of podcasts to keep you entertained during the trip.

In order to prevent putting yourself or others at risk it is important to make sure you are fully awake, alert and not fatigued or tired. Buckle up, always use a seatbelt, and if you’re travelling with company, encourage them to do the same. Moreover, it is important to stick to the speed limit, as tempting as it may be to pump the gas on a long stretch of open road, the goal is to arrive home safely, not quickly. Finally, get rid of all distractions – no messaging whilst driving or eating when behind the wheel. Rather stop at a restaurant or fast food place to eat. During these pit stops, lock your car when you leave and only stop in safe public areas such as petrol stations, malls, or restaurants along your trip.

It is also important to keep those around you in mind, drive respectfully and stay vigilant. According to South Africans Against Drunk Driving (SADD), drunk driving is all too common in South Africa, with 65% of road fatalities being a result of drunk driving. Be mindful of pedestrians and animals too, especially when driving through rural and residential areas.

Remember, getting home safely is the true destination- so drive responsibly, stay alert, and protect every life on the road, including your own. Have a safe journey back and enjoy the rest; you’ve earned it.
