Many of us can agree that the art of cinema is dying. In a world full of streaming services and piracy websites, the comfort of home takes priority. However, going to the cinema offers an experience that can’t be replicated from your couch.
The cinema used to be a place where many of us experienced our firsts: first date, first ‘hang sesh’ without parent supervision, first time breaking the rules by sneaking snacks into the cinema, and for the film enthusiasts out there, this may have been your first glimpse of what a great film is. Going to the cinema was magical, but somewhere between then and now, the magic vanished. We traded the excitement of waiting for a movie to release in cinema for the tedious process of swiping through Netflix looking for something to watch and still settling on Twilight. We traded the loud and robust movie soundtracks for the ‘skip intro’ button.
As we grow older, seeing the words ‘Coming to cinemas soon’ evokes a sense of nostalgia and child-like elation. It’s time we brought back the magic of going to the cinemas! On that note, here are some movies that will be showing this winter: Sinners, Lilo and Stitch, Final Destination: Bloodlines, Life of Chuck, and Ballerina. These are just five out of more than twenty films showing in cinemas right now. There is truly something for everyone, so no excuses.
Another big reason why many people opt for piracy websites is because cinemas can be quite expensive. Even though tickets cost a lot, cinemas have included ways to make tickets more affordable. Ster Kinekor has throwback movie weeks for just R50 a ticket, and if you have a Discovery Vitality card or an Edgars Club card, then you can enjoy movie benefits. NuMetro cinemas also offer discounts for people with ABSA bank cards. These show that it is possible to have the full experience of going to the cinema without spending much. It’s time to bring back the art of cinema, so go out with your friends during the holidays and go watch a movie at the cinema.
