On the morning of Wednesday, 16 July, a student at the North-West University (NWU) Potchefstroom campus was found deceased in a storage room in his hostel. Seemingly, a fellow student and the House Father found the body after they went looking for him but couldn’t reach him. Paramedics declared him deceased on site. A police spokesperson stated that no foul play was suspected but a follow-up investigation would be conducted.

This 21-year-old student, Jonathan Gouws from Vryburg, was part of the law faculty and a house committee member of Ratau Lebone Men’s residence. His portfolios included Transformation and Diversity (TAD) and Student Information and Development (SID). Undoubtedly, the NWU has lost a great leader and inspiration. The quote that motivated him was “I came. I saw, I conquered”. Jonathan was described as incredibly diligent. He would spend hours on a project to perfect it.

Louis Jacobs, the NWU-spokesperson stated that a hostel meeting with the residence students was scheduled for Wednesday night and counselling was arranged for those students.

His parents have been notified and are on their way to Potchefstroom. Counseling and accommodation has also been arranged for the parents.

With the passing of another loving NWU student, it is important to lend support and seek help when in need.

Condolences to the friends and family of Jonathan.
