Glitz. Glamour. Flavour. Fun. These are just a few phrases that could describe the annual North-West University (NWU) Engineering Fest that took place this weekend on Saturday, 26 July. Not only were there numerous fun activities to participate in but our Faculty of Engineering also had a Mr and Miss Engineering pageant for visitors to enjoy.
The Mr and Miss Engineering pageant introduced a new way of viewing the opportunities our students have on a weekly basis. When asked why she wanted to enter the competition, Ané Graupner, a Mechanical Engineering student stated the following, “I wanted to participate in this competition to showcase the versatility of engineering. I was certain that I would learn a lot during this experience. I was excited to meet new people and to grow my ambition in becoming a Mechanical Engineer. As a girl studying Engineering, this is an opportunity to demonstrate my femininity and confidence”.
Her statement shines a light on a very realistic issue many students face today. Many people, especially students, tend to be biased towards certain faculties. The Faculty of Engineering is actively changing the false views people may have against engineers through this event. Odirile Gift Tshweu, a Mechanical Engineering student, felt that the Mr and Miss Engineering pageant set them apart from other faculties. He felt that the competition highlighted the talent, diversity and excellence within their faculty. It is said that even staff members had been invited, which was very exciting for Tshweu.
Jenna Kruger, a first year student studying Chemical Engineering, stated that the organiser of the event had gone through great lengths in making the day special for both the finalists and for those who came to watch. Kruger said she knew the night would be magical.
The Faculty of Engineering has reminded us that the NWU is no place for stereotypes and that anyone can achieve anything they put their mind to.
