Just outside the main gates of campus lies a small bakery called Bakehouse. From cookies to cakes and drinks, this bakery definitely has it all. You could call it our little secret, which is not so secret.
Atmosphere
The minute you enter the bakery, you are greeted by the smell of fresh cookies and a line of eager students waiting to get their hands on any confectionary available (the wait is worth it). The bakery offers seating outside or if you prefer a warmer environment, there is also a sitting area in the loft where students can work. The loft is illuminated by the sunlight and it is nice for taking pictures as well.
Taste
My favourite item to get is a slice of chocolate cake and a cappuccino hot chocolate mixed slushie, also known as a ‘cold mocha’. Many traditionally hot drinks that are turned into iced drinks tend to taste watered down, but both these slushies have concentrated flavours. What I really enjoy is that the pastries and food are made in-house, so you can literally smell your order being made.
Price
The prices are really affordable and cater to the student budget. All the goods are priced at around R10 to R50, which is perfect for an after-lectures treat without breaking the bank.
Service
The service is absolutely wonderful. No matter who is helping you, they will make sure that you feel prioritized and welcome. The service is 10/10.
Bakehouse is an amazing place to get a quick pick-me-up or somewhere to just relax and wait for your next class. Remember to ask for a loyalty card – on your tenth signature you will get an item for free!
