The North-West University (NWU) is known for its green grass, tall trees and blooming gardens that can be found everywhere on any of the three campuses. The university tries to display our environmentally friendly habits, but there is one group that ultimately stands out when it comes to being green

The NWU Green Team started in 2023 and has been influencing students each day since then. With a strong executive committee who lead their helpers, organise events and promote awareness about environmental issues, the NWU Green Team has reached many milestones.

This year alone, the team has hosted competitions and fundraisers for institutions who promote environmental well-being. In March, the team collaborated with Laureus Men’s residence and hosted a trivia night to raise awareness about environmental issues. Later that month, the Green Team had a seed planting class with Dinki Ladies’ residence. To end the month on a high note, the NWU Green Team held a Bonsai exhibition at the Potchefstroom Botanical Gardens.

In July, the NWU Green Team had a competition where people could design creative solutions to plastic waste. The first prize was a whopping R2500, with the second-place winner earning R1500. Initiatives like this include students in green projects, as well as boost our university’s reputation.

In August, the green team collaborated with Potchefstroom Animal Welfare Service (PAWS), where they encouraged students to donate blankets and food to the animal shelter. People could also take the dogs for a walk or spend time with the cats. The event was very successful and helped people connect with animals, while giving the animals much-needed love.

Although the NWU Green Team has no further scheduled events this year, we are grateful for what they have done thus far for not only our campus, but the Potchefstroom community.
