It’s that time of the year where many faculties and residents alike are holding elections to determine their new leadership structure for the coming year. Residences are choosing their House Committee members (HC), while faculties elect their members for the Student Academic Chapter (SAC).

The purpose of the SAC is wide-ranging, and vital for the smooth continuation of student life and the faculty itself. This structure provides students with a formal channel to voice their concerns to their leaders, whether it be academic, social, or even complaints with the faculty.

The SAC is also largely responsible for hosting faculty events, fostering engagement, and creating a culture around the faculty and its students. Therefore, these elections are quite important, as it is often the most direct representation a student will have amongst the large structure of the university. The SAC acts as a link between the faculty and its students, but also the Student Campus Council (SCC), so it is vital that you participate and elect leaders that will perform their duties to the best of their abilities.

Jenna Wilkinson, a first-year student who is running to be the head of Academics in the SAC, outlined her experience. She described the process of campaigning as beneficial, as it forced her and other candidates to clearly articulate their visions and ideas for the future of their committee. She  also noted the bond it created between candidates.

Moreover, she described that running for academics in the SAC was important to her because she feels deeply that academics isn’t something to fear, but rather use as a tool for growth. She wishes to normalise success and teamwork, collaboration amongst students, and an overall positive view to academics.

The Student Academic Chapter (SAC) is an essential component of student life at NWU, acting as a crucial link between students, faculty, and the broader university structure. The elections for these positions are a significant event, offering students the opportunity to choose leaders who will champion their interests, address their concerns, and enrich their academic experience.

As highlighted by Wilkinson, the process of running for a position on the SAC fosters clarity of vision and a commitment to positive change. Active participation in these elections is not merely a formality but a vital step in shaping a collaborative, supportive, and successful academic environment for all. Take this opportunity to participate in the future of your faculty, and make your voice heard by casting your vote. Voting takes place this week for the majority of faculties, with the voting process being held on various eFundi sites.
