Throughout campus, there are several trees and grass patches that add an extra touch of freshness and beauty to the grounds. These green spaces are more than just pretty areas — they offer moments of peace and a chance to press pause during the everyday hustle and bustle of student life.

The area outside E3, where the benches are surrounded by trees, or the iconic “bib grass” in front of the Law Building, are both perfect spots to destress. In fact, spending time in green spaces has been proven to lower cortisol — the body’s primary stress hormone — and promote relaxation. They can also reduce sensory overload, which is especially helpful when you need to clear your mind after long study sessions.

And of course, there’s the Botanical Garden on the North-West University (NWU) Potchefstroom campus. These gardens serve not only as a peaceful sanctuary but also as a space for hands-on gardening within its greenhouses.

When I spoke to students about how these green spaces made them feel, many mentioned how great they are for hanging out with friends, stopping for lunch, or enjoying a coffee together. Others said they use the bib grass for group study sessions, club meetings, or discussion groups.

The various green spaces are a wonderful part of the campus — and if you haven’t taken advantage of them yet, I highly recommend you do!
