HOW TO TELL YOUR PARENTS YOUR MARKS

It’s that time of the semester when the emails start rolling in about how you did during semester tests. And one thing is for certain, when you get home for recess, your parents are going to be wondering how you did. Here are some tips for telling them.

The first thing you’re going to want to do is give some context. Instead of saying, “I got 55%”, try starting with the average; saying how hard it was, and emphasiszing how badly the rest of the class did. Then give your mark. This should help to soften the blow.

Next, try saving some good things to tell them as well. If you did well in an assignment, save it for when you have to give some marks. That way, if you didn’t do too well, tell them the bad mark, but then make them feel better with your good news!

Frame it as a positive. Try telling your parents that you’ve learnt from your mistakes, that you know better now, and that you understand the topics better for the exam.

Finally, as a last resort, use your participation mark. If you did badly in the semester test, but the quizzes, assignments, and attendance marks were good, then just tell them your participation mark, and that you qualified for the exams. That should definitely help.

At the end of the day, as much as your family’s opinions are important, the only thing that matters is how you feel. If you felt that you did your best, then that’s enough. Or if you know you could’ve done better, then that’s something you can improve on. Have a safe and restful recess!
