Does the thought of exam season make your stomach turn? Are you a procrastinator? If yes, here are some tips to clear your mind and pave the way for a successful exam season:

1. Get enough sleep

This one may seem redundant, but it is a vital part of maintaining your mental health. Not only is it important to get enough sleep — seven or more hours according to the Mayo Clinic — but also to get quality sleep.

That means switching off those screens, turning off the lights, and doing something relaxing before bed, such as reading, meditating, or listening to calming music.

If you find yourself struggling to calm your thoughts, having a hard time falling asleep, or sleeping restlessly, you may want to consider using an app such as BetterSleep, or consulting a medical professional.

2. Stay hydrated and healthy

According to Abbott’s article “Hydration and Mental Health: How Are They Related?”, hydration has been linked to several mental conditions such as depression and anxiety, as well as other mental functions such as memory and attention. The article states, “Research has linked hydration status with several mental conditions and functions, such as depression, anxiety, mental acuity (also known as mental sharpness), memory, and attention.”

Sutter Health’s article “Eating Well for Mental Health” states, “Our brains and nervous systems need good nutrition to build new proteins, cells, and tissues. To function well, our bodies need a variety of carbohydrates, proteins, and minerals. Nutritionists suggest eating a variety of foods to get all the nutrients that support mental functioning.”

So drink your water and eat your veggies before and during exam season to ensure optimal mental performance.

3. Get active!

Staying active — whether it’s ten minutes of movement or an intense workout — can help clear your mind and support your mental health. A walk a day can significantly boost your mood and brain function.

4. Plan ahead.

Planning your schedule before exam season can minimise stress and improve your mental well-being.

Queen’s University Belfast’s article “How to Take Care of Your Mental Health During Exam Season” advises, “Make sure that you set a time where you put the books away and just relax in whichever way you want. This will keep you from getting overwhelmed with work and prevent exhaustion.”

5. Get some digital assistance

In today’s digital world, you can use technology to your advantage by using apps and websites to help you summarise, memorise, and plan for exams.

Visit @timstudyfetch’s TikTok account for recommendations on apps and sites you can use during exam season.

6. You are what you say you are

Whatever you think about yourself is true — which means you can change it. Speaking positively about yourself and your abilities might feel strange at first, but it can shift your mindset about stressful situations like exams.

Instead of thinking, “I don’t think I can do this,” or “this is too stressful,” try telling yourself, “I can do hard things.”

7. Meditate

You can also try meditating to calm your thoughts and sharpen your focus. Taking time to meditate each night can reduce stress and improve your mental health.

Preparing for exams can be a stressful time, but following these tips may be just what you need to relax, refocus, and regain your motivation.
