As the first-years of 2026 begin packing their bags, purchasing household essentials and saying their goodbyes, North-West University (NWU) is preparing to welcome a new group of students. Many first-years look forward to the university’s annual Reception and Orientation (R&O) programme, which provides information about the campus, Potchefstroom and student life in general.
Although R&O is popular among new students, it is not compulsory, and some choose to skip the programme and return only when classes begin. For those who miss home, an extra week with family and friends may seem appealing. However, the importance of R&O week should not be overlooked.
Danelle Britz, a second-year BSc student majoring in physiology and psychology, did not attend R&O in her first year. Britz believes that many students underestimate the size of the campus and assume university will be similar to high school. By not attending R&O, she felt she was at a disadvantage compared to those who did.
“I was completely lost, to be honest. Some of the basics that were taught during R&O were still very unfamiliar to me,” she said.
Britz believes all first-year students should attend the programme, as it not only increases confidence in navigating the campus but also helps students form friendships. “It makes you more comfortable in the environment and also in your residence, if you stay in one,” she added.
In July 2025, Abbas Ahsun and Abiodun Okunola conducted a study on students attending orientation programmes. Their research, titled The Efficacy of University-Based Orientation Programs and Support Services in Facilitating the Academic and Social Acculturation of First-Year International Students, found that orientation programmes play a crucial role in helping first-year students transition into university life by addressing both academic and social adaptation needs.
The study also highlighted that orientation programmes contribute significantly to social integration by fostering peer connections, intercultural interaction and campus engagement. Additionally, university-based orientation programmes often include training in cultural sensitivity and awareness, helping to create a more inclusive environment.
While orientation week may initially seem tedious, the benefits and information gained often outweigh the inconvenience. Shared experiences, such as attending sessions together and participating in residence activities, help students build friendships and create lasting memories.
The NWU faculty, first-year committees and House Committee (HC) members invest significant time and effort into making R&O a welcoming and memorable experience. Participating not only supports their work but also provides students with a strong foundation for their university journey.
