The appointment of Prof. Binu Luke as the chief director of the Desmond Tutu School of Medicine marks a historic step for North-West University (NWU). Effective from 1 April 2026, this milestone signals the university’s commitment to expanding medical education and addressing South Africa’s healthcare workforce needs.

“The values of ‘The Arch’ will be the guiding light as the Desmond Tutu School of Medicine begins its journey to produce fit-for-purpose doctors for our nation. Our curriculum and its delivery are intentionally designed to achieve this objective,” said Luke. He emphasised that the vision of the school is deeply rooted in the legacy of Desmond Tutu, focusing on compassion, justice, integrity, and service. He explained that the curriculum will not only prioritise clinical excellence but also ensure graduates are socially responsive and equipped to serve diverse communities. This approach reflects a deliberate effort to align medical training with the real healthcare challenges facing the country.

“On behalf of the NWU, I warmly welcome Prof. Binu Luke as the founding chief director of the Desmond Tutu School of Medicine. This is a defining moment for our institution and for the communities we serve,” said Prof. Mzubanzi Bismark Tyobeka. Tyobeka highlighted that Luke’s leadership and expertise will be critical in shaping a medical school that is both globally competitive and locally relevant. He noted that the initiative reflects NWU’s broader goals of transformation, excellence, and social responsiveness, positioning the institution as a key contributor to national development and healthcare improvement.

Luke further outlined that the school would adopt an integrated academic and clinical training model, combining strong foundational knowledge with innovation in teaching, research, and technology. “Across both the university and the clinical training platforms, this integrated model will support us in realising our dream of graduating doctors who are clinically excellent and responsive to the needs of society,” he added. This holistic system aims to produce well-rounded graduates who are ethically grounded and capable of navigating an evolving healthcare landscape.

The Desmond Tutu School of Medicine, expected to welcome its first students in 2028, will become South Africa’s 11th medical school. Its establishment underscores NWU’s dedication to academic excellence and nation-building. With Luke’s extensive experience in clinical medicine, health-system leadership, and medical education, the university is well-positioned to realise its vision of training a new generation of healthcare professionals who can meaningfully impact society.
