Artificial intelligence is transforming sports by reshaping talent identification, training, and strategy, raising questions about whether technology enhances performance or diminishes the human essence of sport.
“I think AI will change what we call a talented athlete because it tries to turn moments that are indescribable into data points,” says Oluhle Mbuyisa, a soccer player for NWU. He argues that AI risks removing the human element of sport by reducing creativity and unpredictable brilliance into measurable outputs. However, Mbuyisa acknowledges that AI can still be beneficial, as he is open to using it to identify weaknesses and improve his performance as an athlete.
JP Britz, a rugby player for the Eagles, says that it definitely gives more accurate statistics about players in certain positions. He believes AI creates more opportunities for players to be discovered by providing precise data that helps coaches identify talent more effectively. Britz also explains, “AI will shape future generations by allowing young athletes to learn essential skills earlier and experience more professional training environments from a young age.”
Samukelo Langa, a boxer for NWU, supports a balanced approach, combining modern technology with traditional coaching methods. “Both approaches use AI and a bit of the traditional approach, because the game evolves.” Langa adds that he is comfortable with technology in training, noting that AI can help improve endurance, enhance performance, and reduce the risk of injuries.
As AI continues to grow in sports, it is clear that athletes hold mixed views about its impact. While some embrace it as a tool for improvement and opportunity, others remain cautious about its effect on the authenticity of the game. Ultimately, the future of sport may depend on finding the right balance between technological advancement and preserving the human passion that defines competition.
