Looking for a sport that combines fitness, fun, and the outdoors? The canoe club at North-West University’s (NWU) Potchefstroom campus offers students and locals the chance to get active on the water, with no prior experience required. The club provides a refreshing escape from academic pressures while promoting an active and social lifestyle — all while enjoying the beautiful Potchefstroom landscape.
The club is open to anyone aged 16 and older, making it an inclusive space for both students and members of the wider community. This accessibility creates a diverse and welcoming environment where beginners and experienced paddlers train side by side. For students new to Potchefstroom, it also presents a great opportunity to meet people, build friendships, and become part of a supportive sporting community.
To become a member of the Canoe Club, an annual fee of R350 must be paid, and the necessary documents must be completed. A “flatwater proficiency” assessment, required by Paddlesport SA, must also be completed to ensure water safety, and without it members are not permitted to row on their own. By contacting Danica Barnard, also a member of the Canoe Club, prospective members can arrange to “test the waters” for a day or two to determine whether kayaking is something they would like to pursue. According to Barnard, individuals are welcome to try multiple sessions before committing to the R350 membership fee.
One of the biggest advantages for newcomers is that no personal equipment is needed. The club supplies everything required to get started, including boats, paddles, and life jackets. This removes a major barrier to entry and allows first-timers to focus on learning the basics and enjoying the experience without worrying about costs. As members grow more confident and committed, they have the option to invest in their own equipment.
The club also caters to a variety of interests within the sport. Members can take part in competitive canoe racing, test their skills in the strategic game of canoe polo, or simply paddle for fitness and relaxation. This flexibility ensures that everyone — from those seeking high-level competition to those just looking for a fun way to stay active — can find their place within the club. More importantly, participation in competitions is entirely optional, allowing members to engage at a level that suits their personal goals and schedules.
While canoeing does require a degree of physical fitness, beginners are strongly encouraged to join regardless of their level of experience. Like any water sport, there is a learning curve, and falling into the water is often part of the process. However, with guidance from more experienced members and consistent practice, newcomers quickly build confidence, improve their technique, and develop endurance.
The canoeing season typically runs from April, with races and events often taking place over weekends. Beyond structured training sessions, the club also organises social activities and river trips, giving members the chance to explore new environments and strengthen team bonds outside of regular practice. These outings add an extra layer of enjoyment and adventure to the sport.
According to Henk Louw, an NWU lecturer and member of the NWU Canoe Club, one aspect of the sport that people often underestimate is that balance is extremely important. “Most beginners do not realise how quickly a kayak can capsize.” Nel Visagie also shares a lesser-known fact about the club, namely that it teaches both rowing and canoe polo for club members.
For students looking to try something new, relieve stress, and embrace an active lifestyle, the NWU Canoe Club offers a unique and accessible opportunity. For more information, contact Henk Louw on 082 895 2106 or join the club’s WhatsApp group at https://chat.whatsapp.com/ImFHEZeE9jjILyVYiTvGfB.
With its combination of inclusivity, skill development, and social engagement, it stands out as a rewarding addition to student life — both on and off the water.
