In an outstanding performance that has caught the attention of the sports community, Bradley Nkoana broke the South African junior 100m record, with a remarkable time of 10,03 seconds in Switzerland at the Stade de la Charrière, during the La Chaux-de-Fonds meeting on 14 July.
Wapad recently spoke with the record breaker to talk about his thoughts on the race, his journey to this achievement, the demands of balancing sports and academics, and how his aunt played a huge role in his success.
Reflecting on his performance, Bradley shared: “The race was very fast. I got out well from the blocks and stayed patient in my drive phase. I saw Benji moving away from me, and as I transitioned, I remained calm. It felt like I was spectating my body running for a good 40 metres, and then in the last 30 metres, I had to push hard as I realised I was still in the race.”
Bradley’s journey to this achievement is one of commitment and dedication. In 2023, he faced a significant setback when he tore his ACL, with doctors saying he might never run again. He explained: “When I look back at last year, I had a lot of injuries. I tore my ACL, and the doctor told me I wouldn’t be able to run again, but with God’s help, I beat the odds. My self-confidence is high, and I’m ready to push through any limits that are placed on me.”
For Bradley, Balancing academics and sports is very challenging, and it often requires sacrifices between the two.
The South African attributed much of his success to his family’s unwavering support. “My family has played a huge role in my success; they believed in me when I didn’t. My aunt, Xoli Radebe, is like a mother to me. She kept telling me that I’m going to be great and that I’m going to the Olympics. She never stopped believing in me. My grandma always kept me grounded, reminding me of the things I want and how important family is,” he added.
Bradley advised aspiring athletes to pursue their dreams with unwavering determination. He emphasised that no one should limit you and that even if others doubt your potential, you should remain obsessed with achieving your goals.
Bradley Nkoana’s journey is a testament of faith, resilience, and the importance of having a supportive family. His record breaking performance is an inspiration to many young aspiring athletes who are determined to make an impact.
Bradley is currently in Paris, and he is one of seven NWU Eagles representing South Africa at the Olympic Games.
