With exam season heavily upon us, and end-of-year fatigue hitting everyone like a truck, it is more important than ever to eat healthy. Unfortunately, most of us are not doing that. So here are some foods that can help you get through the rest of this exam season.
Citrus Fruits
One of the lightest and easiest study snacks you can eat is citrus fruit. This includes oranges, grapefruit, lemons, and even berries. These fruits have been associated with lowering the risk of cognitive decline. Citrus is also refreshing and easy to snack on during study breaks, making it a healthy and energising option.
Eggs
Eggs have also been linked to improved brain function. A 2021 review published in the National Library of Medicine (Kucab et al., 2019) found that around 300 milligrams of egg yolk per day may improve short-term learning, memory, and attention span. Eating the whole egg provides a balanced range of nutrients. You can prepare eggs in many ways, such as boiled, scrambled, or fried.
Vegetables
It is nearly impossible to talk about healthy eating without mentioning vegetables. Even if you roll your eyes at the thought, the benefits remain clear. Vegetables help improve brain function and overall cognition. Some of the most nutrient-dense options include carrots, broccoli, lettuce, and green peas. Including these in your meals can make a real difference in your concentration and energy levels.
The Temptation of Junk Food
The temptation to reach for caffeine-loaded energy drinks or a bag of chips is strong, especially when you need an instant boost. However, these quick fixes often do more harm than good. Drinks like Red Bull and Monster contain high amounts of sugar and artificial ingredients. They may give you a short burst of energy, but they are usually followed by a sharp crash. This can leave you feeling more tired, irritable, and unfocused than before.
Sugary snacks have a similar effect. They are usually highly processed and provide little long-term energy. It is better to choose whole foods that give your body and brain slow and steady fuel.
Final Thoughts
As you continue studying, remember that the food you eat is just as important as the hours you spend with your notes. By choosing nourishing options like citrus fruits, eggs, and vegetables, you are providing your brain with what it needs to perform well. Good luck with the last stretch of exams. The finish line is in sight.
