Recently, Google expanded its student deals to more countries globally, particularly in Africa, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Zimbabwe and, of course, South Africa were included.
This student offer, which includes their Gemini AI Pro plan and usually costs R429.99 per month, is now free for an entire year.
The plan includes 2TB of cloud storage for Photos, Gmail, and Google Drive. It also includes more access to Gemini’s (Google’s AI chatbot) more advanced features, such as more photo uploads, deep research, more video overviews in NotebookLM, and video and photo generation. It also includes Gemini across Google services, such as Google Docs, Gmail and Google Sheets.
This is clearly an attempt to entice students to use their own services and compete with ChatGPT, which is popular amongst students with 700 million weekly users compared to Google Gemini’s 350 million users.
This is a great offer to get students into Google’s ecosystem of products, because once the free trial is up in a year’s time, you wouldn’t want to lose access to features you’ve become used to. When used responsibly and ethically, these tools can help your learning, especially tools like NotebookLM.
This offer is applicable to all university students in South Africa, including North-West University (NWU) students. The offer ends on the 9th of December 2025, so if you’re curious, check it out before then. Get the offer here: https://gemini.google/students/
