Music Café, more affectionately known as Musics to North-West University (NWU) students, is a hotspot for students and Potchefstroom residents alike to wind down with some good music, a lively atmosphere, and the occasional tequila-fueled bad decision. But if you don’t want to be that person getting kicked out, here’s a checklist of what not to do when the drinks start flowing.
For anyone who has ever wondered what it takes to get kicked out of Musics, here are some tips to follow if you don’t want to find yourself in that position:
1. Know your limits!
When you’ve had one too many, it may be in your best interest to make your way home. According to JJ Alberts, a Musics manager, “If you get too drunk, we will first ask you to calm down. If you keep bothering people or the staff, we’ll ask you to leave.”
This includes throwing objects down from the balcony into the parking lot (yes, it actually happens), conveniently forgetting to pay your tab, and, according to Musics bouncer DG Jacobs, a common occurrence, passing out.
2. Don’t steal the glasses (seriously)
If you’re looking for new kitchenware, Musics isn’t the place. Stealing from any establishment can result in a permanent ban from the premises, legal charges, fines, a criminal record, or even potential jail time. Alberts said that many customers take chances and attempt to walk off with glasses.
3. Take your beef outside
All too often, alcohol and fights go hand in hand. While it is not too common at Musics specifically, Jacobs said it is still something to be mindful of. Be considerate and settle your disputes in private.
4. No means NO!
If you’re looking for love, sober and respectful is the best way to go. Alcohol can blur your judgment, but that’s no excuse for making others uncomfortable. If someone says no, take it seriously. Alberts said that if there is a complaint against you, you will receive a warning, and any further complaints after that will result in you being escorted out.
5. Pay it forward
Being kind costs you nothing. Greet the staff, tip your bartender, and remember your “please” and “thank you”. Showing your appreciation to those who serve you goes a long way.
“We see it as: we cater to you the whole night, and we’re delivering you a service. We want to make it as enjoyable as possible for you. So just that little respect back is always appreciated,” said Alberts. While this one may not get you kicked out, it might get you a quicker drink.
At the end of the day, staying on the good side of Musics’ staff is easy: drink responsibly, don’t steal the décor, and remember that “no” still means “no,” even in a dimly lit bar. Follow the rules, and you’re guaranteed a good night out (and an invite back).
