We are well into the exam season, but that does not mean all hope is lost. There is still time to save the semester. If you have been struggling to retain information or stay awake while studying, there are some study techniques that may be unconventional but could be helpful to include in your study routine.
1. Keep your mouth busy!
If you often feel tired while studying, try chewing gum, nibbling on sunflower seeds, or eating biltong to keep your mouth active. It is difficult to fall asleep while chewing, and it will help keep you awake.
2. Your voice on repeat!
Record yourself explaining your notes and listen to the recordings while taking a walk or doing chores. You can also use Descript to turn your slides into audio if you do not like hearing the sound of your own voice.
3. The Pomodoro technique!
This study method focuses on concentration, productivity, and time management. It encourages you to break your work into short intervals, traditionally 25 minutes long, separated by brief breaks. This structure helps maintain focus while reducing mental fatigue. Choose a topic, divide it into smaller sections, set a timer for 25 minutes, and work until the timer rings. Take a 5 minute break before starting again. After four Pomodoros, take a longer break of 15 to 30 minutes to recharge.
4. Spaced repetition!
This technique helps with memory retention by reviewing information at increasing intervals over time. By revisiting material gradually, you strengthen long-term memory and improve your ability to understand complex topics. You schedule review sessions according to how well you have learned the material, spending more time on concepts you find difficult and less on those you understand well. This prevents overload and encourages meaningful learning.
5. Competition!
While you should not compare yourself to others overall, a bit of harmless competition can motivate you. When studying in the library, choose a random person to pace yourself with. Only take breaks when they do. If they leave, choose someone new. Another option is to set a goal, for example, stay longer than three students before leaving.
Every day, it gets a little easier, but you have to be consistent. Lock in and be the best version of yourself.
