On Monday, 2 March, students arriving for early classes discovered an act of vandalism at the campus Amphitheatre. The Pride flag — a symbol of inclusion — was defaced with the phrase “Nazi, Heil Hitler R.H.”, and a sticker from Kruispunt, a local church, was placed next to the phrase.

The incident has sparked significant distress across the student body, as the use of historical symbols of violence has forced many to relive the trauma of similar events in previous years.

Community Reaction and Inquiry

The presence of religious branding alongside the phrase has led to intense debate on social media. While it has not been confirmed whether the church sticker and the text are linked, many students have expressed that such actions contradict Christian values and may constitute a hate crime.

Seeking clarity, Wapad reached out to Kruispunt for a statement regarding the use of their branding in this context. At the time of publication, no feedback had been received.

Identification and Legal Action

In an internal “Pride Committee Update”, Jabulile Motai, Head of Communication for the Potchefstroom Campus Pride Society, informed members that the incident was immediately reported to Protection Services. Unlike a similar occurrence last year, CCTV footage was available, allowing authorities to identify the individual responsible.

Louis Jacobs, Director of Corporate Relations and Marketing, confirmed to Wapad that the suspect was apprehended early on 2 March. Jacobs stated that once the investigation is finalised, the Student Disciplinary Department will formalise charges. In addition to internal processes, the university has laid a criminal charge of malicious damage to property with the South African Police Service (SAPS).

Impact on Campus Safety

The vandalism has had a profound effect on the LGBTQIA+ community. Motai described the damage as “deeply disappointing”, noting that it represents ongoing challenges regarding visibility and safety.

Some students have questioned the university’s initial response. Pilane Kgothatso, a final-year Behavioural Sciences student, expressed frustration that the flag was repainted before a formal statement was issued to the student body. “It honestly feels like the university doesn’t take these matters seriously because the first thing they did was try to hide it and repaint the flag right away,” Kgothatso remarked. She warned that “matters left unresolved always find a way to occur again” and advocated for the expulsion of those involved to prevent potential physical harm.

In response to concerns regarding campus security, Jacobs assured students that “large areas of the Potchefstroom Campus are covered by surveillance cameras” and that routine patrols are conducted, particularly in high-traffic areas.

Broader Consequences

The actions of a single individual have created a ripple effect across the university and the Potchefstroom community. While the LGBTQIA+ community reports feeling unsafe and targeted, Kruispunt has also faced social media backlash despite the lack of confirmed involvement. Furthermore, the incident has raised external concerns regarding the university’s reputation and its ability to maintain an organised and safe environment.

The university maintains its commitment to the dignity of all members. “As an institution, we remain committed to fostering an environment of respect and inclusivity … regardless of race, political affiliation, religion, gender, or sexual orientation,” the official statement read.

As disciplinary proceedings continue, the campus remains watchful, seeking a resolution that ensures accountability and restores a sense of security for all students.
