The Potchefstroom Students’ Campus Council (SCC) plays a crucial role in shaping campus student life by fostering community, supporting students’ needs, and developing leadership skills beyond the lecture room.
In addition, Thakgalo Matsimela, Chairperson of Student Academic Chapter (SAC) under the Faculty of Humanities, said that SAC focuses on representing student needs and interests within the faculty while promoting academic integrity and excellence. Matsimela explained that the structure acts as a bridge between students and faculty, ensuring that student needs and concerns are heard and addressed.
Kgotso Masenya, SAC Liaison Officer under the Faculty of Humanities, further explains that student organisations create spaces where students can connect beyond academics and feel part of a community. Events, such as movie nights, game nights and faculty pageants, promote social cohesion and help students feel welcome and engaged.
Student organisations play a key role in developing leadership skills. Andiswa Tyobeka, member of the Student Campus Council Arts and Culture Office, explained, “The SCC helps students develop leadership skills and confidence by giving them real responsibilities, such as leading teams and organising events which encourages decision-making and accountability.”
Despite challenges such as student engagement and limited resources, these organisations remain important in shaping student life. By creating opportunities for leadership, collaboration and community-building, they contribute to the overall campus experience.
