Why is there a big orange box standing at the entrance to the Ferdinand Postma Library? It’s because that’s the box you have to put your book donations in for the Lift Lives project.
Dina Mashiyane, senior manager of the library, said the Lift Lives project is the first of its kind for the North-West University Library and Information Service. “This has been done before, but in a different way, where the project lasted for a limited period of time, with a specific community in mind,” she said.
Mashiyane mentioned that the current Lift Lives project focuses on collecting books so that they can be donated to various disadvantaged communities in need.
What types of books can you donate? Mashiyane explained that the library welcomes donations of new or used books that are still in good condition. “Fiction, non-fiction, educational materials and reference books are all valuable additions,” she said.
Mashiyane explained why it is important for students to donate their old books and notes to the library rather than throwing it away. “When students donate books, they support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). It aims to bridge inequalities and create a more developed and sustainable communities, ”she said.
Mashiyane said the Lift Lives project has a goal to address SDG 4 (quality education) and SDG 10 (reduced inequalities).
“The aim is also to collect a diverse range of books that will enrich school, university and community libraries and establish a conducive learning environment for those who may not have equitable access to reading resources and materials,” Mashiyane said.
The Lift Lives project does not have an end date. Mashiyane said that students can make donations throughout the year because there are so many communities in need. The book donations can be made at any of the NWU libraries.
