UNDERDOGS BROUGHT BLUES TO THE COURTS

Netball was the first big sport of the year to be completed on the side of the ladies’ residences. It started early in the first semester and was set to be completed within a month, much shorter than last year. As with many of the other sports, the rain did have a say, and the finals day had to be postponed and only took place on Thursday, 8 May. 

 

The tournament consisted of four pools, meaning two of them had four teams and the other two had three teams. The top two teams of each pool advanced to finals day. 

 

Eikenhof, Bellatrix, Vergeet-My-Nie (VMN) and Heide were the final four teams after emerging victorious in their respective quarterfinals. 

 

The first semi-final was between VMN and Heide. VMN’s title defence was looking good up until this point but atlas another netball cup wasn’t to be for this team as Heide took the win to secure their place in the finals.

 

In the other semi-final, Eikenhof, a relatively small residence, took on Bellatrix, a town residence. Bellatrix won the first year’s netball earlier in the year and momentum was on their side. The odds were against Eikenhof and they unfortunately did not manage to overcome those odds, settling for a playoff match for third and fourth place.

 

VMN took the third place on the podium, beating Eikenhof in the playoff for third and fourth place.  

 

Heide had high hopes entering the finals after they managed to defeat the previous title holders, but Bellatrix quickly stopped that hope. After a hard-fought match Bellatrix took the Ladies Residence Netball Cup for 2025.
