In a world where voices compete to be heard, one man has chosen a quieter path: to listen. Noah Kim, a pastor at Cachet Church on campus, has dedicated his life to creating a safe space for others—whether they are struggling with relationships, spirituality, or simply need to talk about Harry Potter.
In a generation where people love to talk about themselves, their dreams, and their struggles, few stop to listen. Kim saw the gap, prayed about it, and stepped into it. He answered God’s calling to come to the NWU Potchefstroom campus and listen.
He patiently sits in the amphitheatre, awaiting his next visitor. He has been doing this in Potchefstroom since 2021. When everyone is talking but nobody is listening, feelings of loneliness, sadness, and even depression can arise. Filling that gap and simply listening creates a sense of belonging.
It can be difficult not to become too invested in the stories of others, but Kim keeps himself grounded by reminding himself that they are in God’s hands. There is only so much he can do beyond praying for them. While talking to students, he prays for them silently and asks God to guide him in offering advice. He gives practical guidance and links already existing habits with new ones.
Kim graduated from high school in Korea and came to South Africa immediately afterward. Having lived in South Africa for several years, he understands local cultures and perspectives, which helps him provide advice that meets students’ needs. When questioned by people of other faiths about Christianity, he offers thoughtful illustrations to encourage reflection, always listening first and giving advice only when asked.
The world could use more people like Kim —those who listen without expecting personal gain. His advice is simple but profound: “Listen.” You never know what someone else is going through, and sometimes just listening can make all the difference.
