Are you staying home for the holidays and already dreading the boredom that can come with the long break? While it may seem uninspiring at first, spending the festive season at home offers endless opportunities to relax, reset and stay productive. Here are a few ideas to help you make the most of your holiday at home:
Make DIY Christmas Presents
The festive season can be both stressful and expensive. If you’ve started wondering whether hugs might qualify as gifts this year, it may be time to get a little creative.
Handmade presents such as festive cards, decorative items, customised plates or vases, or even patchwork sweaters, pants and T-shirts add a personal touch that store-bought gifts often lack. DIY gifts are not only meaningful but also cost-effective — and crafting can be a fun and relaxing way to spend your time.
Start That Hobby
If you’ve been postponing that Pilates class, wanting to learn a musical instrument, or thinking about finally writing that book, now is the perfect opportunity to begin. Starting a new hobby can bring excitement and structure to your days, turning a potentially dull holiday into a rewarding and creative experience.
Do Some Volunteering
If you’re craving purpose and productivity this holiday, consider volunteering. Local SPCAs, environmental conservation organisations, old-age homes and children’s homes are often in need of extra hands during the festive season. Volunteering allows you to give back to your community while making someone else’s holiday a little brighter — a meaningful way to spend your time.
Get a Holiday Job
Taking on a temporary holiday job is a great way to build your CV, stay busy and earn extra money for festive expenses. Waitressing, barista work, event staffing, online reviewing and marketing jobs are popular part-time options. Internships can also be valuable if you’re looking to gain experience related to your field of study.
Host a Garage Sale
Spring cleaning during the holidays may sound daunting, but it can be surprisingly rewarding. A garage sale gives you the chance to declutter while making some extra cash.
Sell clothes you no longer wear or books that have been collecting dust on your shelves. Not only does this help clear space, but it also gives your belongings a second life — and helps fund your Christmas shopping.
Staying home for the holidays doesn’t have to be boring. With the right mindset, it can become a time to try new things, focus on yourself and finally get around to the projects you’ve been putting off all year.
