Campus sport plays a major role in student life, bringing together athletes, supporters and the wider university community. From packed stadiums to competitive league matches, some teams consistently stand out above the rest.

At the North-West University (NWU), rugby and soccer appear to be among the most competitive, and widely supported sports, with athletes highlighting community support, teamwork and discipline as key reasons for their dominance.

For many students, rugby sits at the centre of campus sporting culture. Zihan, a rugby player at North-West University, believes the university’s Varsity Cup rugby team stands out above others in terms of popularity and exposure.

According to him, rugby’s dominance is closely tied to the size and enthusiasm of the university’s rugby community. “The rugby community is big at our university, which makes it more popular,” he explains. While skill and strategy remain important in any sport, Zihan believes that strong support systems behind the scenes also contribute to the team’s success. He highlights the role of coaching staff and team management as essential factors that help maintain high performance levels.

Recognition as a top team on campus also brings a sense of reward for the athletes involved. Zihan notes that support from fans motivates players, especially considering the sacrifices and dedication required to compete at a high level.

Another student athlete, JP Britz, shares a similar perspective. In his view, rugby dominates campus leagues, largely because of its strong national presence and visibility. South Africa’s success on the international stage, particularly winning the Rugby World Cup twice in a row, has helped elevate the sport’s status and popularity across the country.

Britz also points to attendance figures and media coverage as evidence of rugby’s influence. Varsity Cup matches attract large crowds and receive extensive promotion on television, social media and campus platforms. “It is also a pathway to becoming a professional player,” he explains, noting that sponsorships and exposure make university rugby one of the most visible student sports.

Beyond popularity, Britz emphasises the values that sport instils in athletes. Rugby requires discipline, resilience and strong character due to its physical nature. For players, being recognised as part of the top sport on campus is rewarding because it reflects the hard work and preparation that often go unnoticed by spectators.

However, rugby is not the only sport making an impact on campus. Omphemetse, a soccer player, believes soccer remains a dominant force among students, particularly because of its cultural and community roots. He explains that many students, especially those from township backgrounds, grew up playing soccer and therefore naturally gravitate towards the sport at university. “Soccer has always dominated even in the kasis,” he says, highlighting how the sport is deeply embedded in many communities.

For Omphemetse, the key strength of successful soccer teams lies in chemistry. Since players come from different backgrounds and meet for the first time at university, building strong relationships within the team becomes essential. This sense of unity allows players to work together more effectively on the field.

He also stresses that teamwork is one of the most important lessons that other teams can learn from successful soccer squads. When players focus on the collective goal rather than individual success, the entire team performs better.

While opinions may differ on which sport truly dominates campus leagues, one thing remains clear: success rarely happens by chance. Strong support systems, dedicated coaching staff, teamwork, discipline and passionate communities all play a role in shaping the most competitive teams on campus.

As university sport continues to grow, the rivalry between different codes, from rugby to soccer, only adds to the excitement of campus life. Whether through packed rugby stadiums or energetic soccer matches, student athletes continue to push themselves to perform at the highest level, inspiring pride and unity within the university community.
